Fast-tracking brain innovation in times of COVID-19

The last 14 months have been a most testing time for the world in general and for global health in particular. COVID-19 took the world by surprise as weaknesses were exposed in public health systems’ preparedness to face pandemics and we continue to face the consequences over a year on.

However, the emergence of COVID-19 has also succeeded in accelerating innovation in science, treatments, healthcare and health management. Positive results have been observed where a stronger emphasis on collaboration among different players was placed. From researchers to clinicians to community to biotech, public-private partnerships were strengthened, and, thanks to increased responsiveness from authoritative bodies, more agile ways of fast-tracking innovation were set in motion.

The purpose of this Brain Innovation Days digital session, the 3rd in the series, is to explore the positive direct and indirect results of COVID-19 pandemic response and research on the brain innovation ecosystem, what lessons have been learned, what countries have come out winning, what advancements have been made and what threats lie ahead – particularly when and if the world returns to the pre-COVID status quo. The session will feature testimonials from key opinions leaders, patients, representatives from the EU and WHO level and the industries that were forced to adapt to this rapid change of pace in innovation.

The seminar will use the historical context to address events and conditions that may influence the way in which COVID-[20]19 both concludes and lingers in 2021-2022 and beyond. “No matter how eloquently historical ‘endings’ are proclaimed and how sympathetically we may listen, what seems most striking is the inability to connect these endings to any pattern of meaning,” wrote Paul Corcoran in “Historical Endings: Waiting with Godot,” published in 1989 as the Cold War was beginning to end. On the cultural front, in the midst of 2020, a Scottish rock band, made famous by their first single, “Instant History,” released the album, A Celebration of Endings. What are the implications of endings that are framed as “instant” and how do events linger?

Mary Dudziak, Griggs Candler Professor of Law, Emory University School of Law, author of War Time and Cold War Civil Rights, will open with her reflections on COVID in the context of her work on armed conflict and the indeterminate endings of global warfare and the dialogue between national policy and international relations. Laura Spinney, author of Pale Rider: The Spanish Flu of 1918 and How It Changed the World, will discuss the final section of her book, “The Post-Flu World” and the conclusion of the 1918 Spanish flu in the context of 1919-1920. Paula Larsson, vaccine historian at Oxford University, will discuss the idealized narrative of vaccines as the resolution and end of pandemics, and the complex realities of vaccine roll-out, popular hesitancy, and resistance. The legal and historical context sets the stage for Michel Goldman, who will address the meaning of endings, interdisciplinary cooperation, and how we learn from past crises to address the future.

Michel Goldman (ULB, I3H Institute) and Jean Christophe Goffard (Professor of Medicine, Head of the Internal Medicine Department of the Erasmus Hospital) participated in a webinar organised by CHIREC and Prof. Elie Cogan where they talked about the remarkable effectiveness of monoclonal antibodies specific to SARS-CoV-2, which are about to revolutionise the initial treatment of COVID 19. This therapeutic approach, which is complementary to vaccination, is aimed in particular at people at risk of severe COVID.

EU member states are dependant on the vaccine agreements negotiated by the European Commission that were signed with an aim of providing an equal access among its citizens. Our co-director, Michel Goldman calls for the EU to act in an agile way by developing the production capacities that will help to ensure higher vaccination rates.
